Govt to set up AI governance group, expert panel by December
The Indian government’s move to establish two dedicated AI governance bodies by December is a masterstroke in turning AI chaos into coordinated policy clarity. With the Artificial Intelligence Governance Group (AIGG) and Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) poised to unify efforts across ministries, it’s like assembling the Avengers—but for AI regulation and innovation. Expect these bodies to wrestle with everything from ethical AI use to India-specific risk assessments, all while priming the nation for a major AI policy push at next year's India AI Summit.
This initiative aligns with India’s comprehensive AI governance guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) earlier this year. The AIGG is designed as a small, permanent inter-agency body led by the principal scientific advisor, incorporating various ministries and key regulators like RBI and TRAI. Meanwhile, the TPEC, composed of experts from AI, law, and public policy domains, will shape the technical and ethical contours of India’s AI framework. Together, these bodies reflect India’s ambition to balance AI innovation with safety, ethics, and inclusiveness, setting a benchmark for emerging economies in the global AI governance landscape.
