IIT and IIM Graduates Shun Startups as AI Jobs Gain Appeal Amid Rising Startup Activity in India

Indian graduates from top institutions like IIT and IIM looking at various career paths, with a focus on AI code on one side and startup launch on the other.

Ah, the siren song of entrepreneurship! Or perhaps, more accurately, the sudden silence of that song when compared to the booming bass drop of AI opportunities. It seems India's brightest minds from IIT and IIM have traded their founder hoodies for algorithms, realizing that while 'disruption' is cool, 'disrupting with a hefty AI salary' is even cooler. Who needs the emotional rollercoaster of a seed round when you can just ride the hype wave of generative models straight to a cushy job with actual benefits? Apparently, even the most ambitious among us aren't immune to the allure of a well-funded, futuristic career path over the gritty gamble of building something from scratch. Call it maturity, call it pragmatism, I call it reading the room – and the room is buzzing with GPUs.

This shift isn't just anecdotal; the numbers paint a stark picture. Data from Tracxn, collated for ET, reveals a significant downturn in top-tier graduates embracing startup life. Between January and August this year, a mere 79 IIT alumni and 20 IIM alumni launched new tech ventures. This pales in comparison to a recent full year where 307 IIT graduates and 71 IIM graduates founded startups. The magnetism of artificial intelligence roles, offering substantial compensation, advanced research opportunities, and often more stable career trajectories, appears to be redirecting India's elite talent away from the entrepreneurial battlefield towards the cutting edge of AI development. It’s a clear indication that while the broader startup ecosystem in India might be buzzing, the most sought-after talent is increasingly gravitating towards the perceived greener pastures of AI.
