India's data centre capacity set to grow 5x to 8GW by 2030: Jefferies
If data centres were a growing city, India is on track to become its bustling metropolis by 2030, multiplying its capacity fivefold to a staggering 8GW. It’s not just raw power—it’s the perfect storm of soaring data traffic, cloud computing, and AI adoption that’s turning India into a data colossus, fueled by a $30 billion investment appetite. Mumbai and Chennai are already playing landlord to most of this data demand, but the stage is set nationwide for a massive technological infrastructure boom.
According to Jefferies’ recent report, India’s data centre capacity, which currently stands at around 1.7GW with nearly full occupancy, will grow to 8GW by 2030. This expansion will be driven by the rapid escalation in data consumption, government mandates on data localization, and AI deployments. The forecast also anticipates leasing revenues jumping to $8 billion, with major players like Bharti Airtel, Reliance, and AdaniConneX expected to lead about 35-40% of the new capacity. The capital expenditure requirement is projected at $30 billion, underscoring the significant scale of this infrastructure development necessary to meet future digital demands.
